This book is an unusual essay in architectural history. It uses hitherto unpublished government archive materials to tell how Trafalgar Square, rallying point for tourists and political demonstrators alike, was conceived, quarrelled over and finally, after many years of building and many delays, completed. Nelson’s Column is London’s most famous landmark. It was begun during the «hungry forties» amid much turmoil, including a nine-month strike of the stonemasons. There was a competition for the most fitting memorial to the hero of Trafalgar-and many weird and wonderful projects (described in this book) were submitted before the present column, with its attendant lions, was decided upon. Even after that, it almost failed to be erected because people said it would spoil the view of the National Gallery. Trafalgar Square was the first open square in London, and from the start its designers were concerned to adapt it to the management of crowds and the putting down of riotous assemblies. This was one reason for the height of the plinth round Nelson’s Column and the siting of the fountains-now (an unforeseen development) frequented by bathers on Guy Fawkes Night. In 1848, while the Square was still in the making, demonstrations there were prohibited, and ever since then the story of the Square and of militant manifestations of British Labour have coincided-with Bloody Sunday in 1877 and the Hunger Marches of the 1930s as highlights. The concluding part of this book deals with the Square as rallying point of popular agitations and of the perennial fight for free speech and assembly
