Today there are only two communist powers in the traditional sense left in the world. They are North Korea and Cuba, neither of them exactly a shining advertisement for the success of Marxist-Leninist ideology. Other communist powers — notably the People—s Republic of China — have followed the well-worn advice to adapt or die. But if they nowadays offer textbook examples of economic growth, they have long since ceased to hold out any paradigm of collective political organisation.
