Yeats’s life presents an extraordinary mixture of the public and the personal. He had a long and mostly unrequited love-affair with a beautiful patriot. He attempted to found a mystical order with an Irish colouring. He created in the Abbey a popular theatre and then wrote esoteric plays for it. He married a woman who turned out to be a seer. Though supposed to be otherwordly, he threw himself into every controversy, attacking in turn Queen Victoria and De Valera, and wrote poems sympathising with the Easter Rebellion and later with impotence, he submitted to an operation to cure it. Emerging from a private world, he wrote poems quoted by English speakers everywhere.
