Though supposed to be otherwordly, he threw himself into every controversy, attacking in turn Queen Victoria and De Valera, and wrote poems sympathising with the Easter Rebellion and later with impotence, he submitted to an operation to cure it. Emerging from a private world, he wrote poems quoted by English speakers everywhere.
