A complex novel that explores the intimate details of the life of Anna Wulf, a writer evolving as a woman in relationships with men, as an artist, as a communist, and as a mother. Points up the differences between life and art as conveyed in Wulf’s notebooks. Confounded by writer’s block, the ferociously independent Wulf explores her situation in four notebooks, one for each of the strands in her life; the golden one is the one in which, struggling to retain her sanity, she brings these strands together.
