What is a child doing when creating a spontaneous poetical monologue, when indulging in dramatic role-playing talk, when engaging in discussion, when openly gossiping? Children’s use of language is an important pointer to an understanding of the world they live in, of the development of their perceptions and attitudes. The different forms their talk will take, and the situations in which they use these forms, richly repay close study on the part of educationalists and teachers.
